Jebel Shams is known as the “Mountain of the Sun” and is one of Oman’s beautiful natural marvels, characterized by dramatic landscapes, deep canyons, and rich cultural heritage. Coincidentally, it’s the highest point in Oman, inside the Al Hajar Mountains, where breathtaking views offer a selection of outdoor activities. Some of the most visited places and things you could do in the region of Jebel Shams include:
Jebel Shams is the highest peak in Oman at 3,009 meters or 9,872 feet; part of the breathtaking panoramas of the Al Hajar mountains; challenging hikes up to the summit which offers stunning views over mountains, valleys, and the famous Wadi Ghul, known as Oman’s Grand Canyon. The sunrises and sunsets are particularly surreal. For all who cannot enjoy climbing up, there are many good vantage points along the mountain roads overlooking the region.
Wadi Ghul is sometimes referred to as “Oman’s Grand Canyon.” Being one of the largest in the region, it is at such depth and dramatic gorge. Formed over thousands of years through the natural erosive powers of carving the mountain ranges, this huge canyon stretches over the Al Hajar Mountains, offering some of the most spectacular scenery in Oman. It offers enough trekking possibilities and photography opportunities to absorb the wild beauty of the place. Indeed, the best views of the canyon are at its rim, where it presents you with a vast chasm of depths.
The Balcony Walk is a relatively short hike at 2-3 hours but with great scenic rewards over the edge of Wadi Ghul. There is a wonderful cliffside hike with canyon views that will be simply unobstructed. Nicknamed the Balcony Walk because the real trail does seem like some sort of balcony hanging over a valley below, thus giving tremendous views across the gorge, the hike is among the easiest in the region and accessible to people with average fitness. It also allows viewing the natural beauty of the area while still being quite close to the village of Wadi Nakhr.
Wadi Nakhr, at the foot of Jebel Shams, it is a deep valley known for its thick vegetation and terraced farms and out-of-the-way villages. Dotted by traditional stone dwellings, the terracing is still in use with the locals cultivating crops of pomegranates, olives, and grapes. This peaceful wadi gives a glimpse into rural Omani life. Also, it is a very good starting point for those who want to enter the several hiking trails surrounding it, for instance, the Balcony Walk, or just enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the valley.
Located along mountain roads which take one up to Jebel Shams, the Jebel Shams Viewpoint is the best place to enjoy the marvelous views of the scenery. Extensive valleys, ridges, and deep gorges represent the various dramatic topographies of the region. One of the most accessible viewpoints that can be enjoyed because of its location near the main road. In addition, it is a good photogenic area, especially in the morning or evening when colors change dramatically of the mountains.
Al Khitaym is a traditional mountain village located on the slopes of Jebel Shams. The village offers old stone houses and a peaceful rural atmosphere. Surrounding the village, local families farm from the terraced fields, and the region is an interesting glimpse into traditional Omani life. Visitors can stroll along narrow lanes and visit friendly locals and older mudbrick houses. It’s quite perfect to experience a slower pace of life as experienced in Oman’s mountain regions and learn about the agricultural practices that have sustained these communities for centuries.
